The Rainier boys basketball team needed a comeback on the road Thursday, but came away with a 40-37 win over Kalama.
“We were able to grind out the win, but it wasn't pretty,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “We were a little overzealous defensively and some of our guys had a difficult time getting into the flow of the game. Credit to Kalama, they competed and made us earn that one.”
Peyton Sheaffer led the Mountaineers (7-2, 4-1 C2BL) with 13 points, with Jake Meldrum adding nine and Johnny Boesch adding eight.
The Chinooks went on a run to take a four-point lead into halftime after a low-scoring start to the game, but Rainier held its hosts to just eight points in each of the latter two quarters to claw its way back ahead.
The Mountaineers will be back up north at home next Wednesday, hosting Morton-White Pass.
