The Rainier girls basketball team had to pull off a late comeback on the road, and then went on to win in overtime for good measure, beating Mossyrock 55-52 on Saturday.

The Mountaineers led by four points at halftime but saw it disappear in the third quarter, as the Vikings went on a 15-5 run over the course of eight minutes. Needing to come back, Rainier pulled things back together in time to tie the game up at 48-48 when the final buzzer sounded on regulation.

In overtime, the Mountaineers held the Vikings to just four points, and squeaked out winners with seven of their own.

“I was happy with our defensive effort tonight as a team, I’m seeing great improvements on the defensive end every game,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. Tough to lose in overtime, but it’s great experience to play close games like this early on in the season.”

Mossyrock’s Hailey Brooks led all players with 21 points, and on the other side of the floor held Rainier’s Haleigh Hanson to just four. Payton Torrey added 17 points for the Vikings.

Both Angelica Askey and Brynn  Beckman scored 18 points for Rainier, and Brooklynn Swenson pitched in 11 to be a third Mountaineer in double figures.

Rainier (3-1, 1-1 C2BL) will stay in non-league play a bit longer, hosting 2A Black Hills on Monday. Mossyrock (2-1, 1-0 1B CVL) will also be back in action Monday, hosting Naselle.
