Mountaineers Topple Beavers for Road Victory

Rainier double-teamed Tenino star Ashley Schow and the Mountaineers’ defense did enough to come away with a 45-34 non-league victory over the Beavers on the road Tuesday.

Bryn Beckman scored a team-high 17 points, Faith Boesch added 14 and Isabella Holmes tacked on eight as the Class 2B Mountaineers handed the Class 1A Beavers their first loss of the season.

“They came out and had a girl help on (Schow),” Tenino coach Scott Ashmore said. “They sat in the middle and wanted to shut (Schow) down.”

Schow still got her points, a game-high 18, but the Beavers saw little offensive help otherwise, with Grace Vestal’s five points being the second-most for the team.

“We need other girls to step up,” Ashmore said. “If other girls step up, they can’t play that defense.”

Tenino (1-1) hosts La Center in another non-league game on Tuesday. Rainier (2-1) travels to Toutle on Friday.
