Mountaineers Waylay Wolverines to Stay Alive at Districts

Rainier romped from start to finish, drubbing Northwest Christian (Lacey) 62-37 in a loser-out game to remain alive in the 2B District 4 playoffs Wednesday at Rochester High School.

The Mountaineers ambushed the Wolverines early with lethal dribble-drive penetration, dominating the paint and attacking the rim with authority.

Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said his team was motivated by the do-or-die contest.

“Our seniors are hungry,” Sheaffer said. “I thought they played pretty well. Logan (Bowers) played well inside and his presence early was noticeable.”

Bowers, who finished with 12 points, overpowered the Wolverines’ big down low, allowing freshman Josh Meldrum to feast. Meldrum, who scored a game-high 23 points, helped the Mountaineers build a comfortable 29-16 lead at the half.

“We have some guys who are in attack mode most of the time,” Sheaffer said. “We got out in transition and got some run-outs. Josh was able to get to the rim.”

Senior Ian Sprouffske added 15 points and Jake Meldrum chipped in eight as the Mountaineers outscored the Wolverines 31–21 in the second half to secure the win.

Rainier next faces Ilwaco at 6 p.m., Friday, at Rochester High School in another loser-out match.

“I know they’re a good team, I know they’ve got a few really good players,” Sheaffer said. “So we’ve got one day to prepare for them. We’re gonna have a great practice tomorrow and be ready on Friday.”
