Rainier trailed by seven at the half then outscored Wahkiakum 34-21 in the second half to complete a 56-50 comeback victory over the Mules at home on Saturday in Central 2B League action.

“Wahkiakum’s zone gave us fits in the first half,” Rainier coach Ben Shaeffer said. “We made a few adjustments and turned up the intensity in the second half. We were able to hit a few 3s and do just enough down the stretch to seal the W.”

The Mountaineers came out on a 14-8 run in the third quarter, then outscored the Miles 20-13 in the final frame to secure the victory and their fifth-straight win.

Rainier senior Ian Sprouffske and freshman Josh Meldrum each scored a team-high 17 points, while Jake Meldrum chipped in 14.

“Jake Meldrum and Ian Sprouffske made some huge shots down the stretch, while David Cano was flying around in the second half, which really helped swint the momentum back in our favor,” Shaeffer said.

Rainier (5-1, 1-0 league) heads to Class 1A Eatonville on Tuesday. Its game against Raymond Monday has been postponed.
