A Centralia officer shot and killed a man Sunday morning while responding to a domestic dispute call, according to the Centralia Police Department.
According to the police, the officer responded to the call around 11 a.m. in the 400 block of North Ash Street. According to Centralia police, the officer made contact with a man and "during the contact, the male subject and officer got into a physical fight."
The officer discharged their firearm and struck the man, who died despite receiving emergency medical treatment, police said. The officer was injured in the fight and no bystanders were injured, according to a news release from the Centralia Police Department.
The police will release video from body-worn cameras, the department said.
The Washington State Office of Independent Investigators said Sunday evening it would investigate the incident.
Washington State Office of Independent Investigators is a new office created by the state legislature in 2021 to conduct independent investigations of deadly uses of force by law enforcement. The office has started its work in the southwestern part of the state, with plans to expand to the rest of Washington in coming years.
The officer has been placed on leave, following standard protocol, according to the Centralia Police Department.
Washington State Office of Independent Investigations will release all future updates on the investigation, including the names of the officers involved. The office is required to release its findings within 120 days.
