Jeremiah Nubbe, a Rainier High School track and field star, recently won the Boys Sports Star of the Year award during the Olympia & Beyond Sports Commission’s annual Thurston County Sports Awards ceremony on Nov. 10.
The awards that were presented recognize athletes and coaches who have made a difference in their community, especially during the pandemic. Awards for Sports Moment of the Year, Thurston County Legend of the Year, and Contributor of the Year were also handed out.
Nubbe took home the award for high school boys, while former Tumwater and current University of Washington student and football player Cade Otton took home the Mens Sports Star of the Year award for college athletes.
Nubbe is one of the most decorated high school athletes in the area, sporting a list of awards and accomplishments a mile long. As a freshman, Nubbe took home the 2B State Championship for discus. He would find success again as a junior where he rewrote the record books with a discus throw of 196 feet, which is a Washington state record for his class.
This past year, Nubbe attended the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon, where he found success once again. The 6’3” thrower placed second in discus, where he threw a personal record of 200.2 feet, and fourth in hammer. Once the competition in Eugene ended, Nubbe was named the boys Washington Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Nubbe continued to add to his accolades.
Following the competition in Eugene, Nubbe went to the USA Track and Field Junior Nationals in Florida. Yet again, Nubbe found great success. This time, he took home a national championship with a throw of 189.7 feet. Nubbe won the competition with a lead by about 14 feet. Ahmari Alvin posted a throw of 175.59 feet.
To go along with his mile long resume, Nubbe is also dedicated to his learning. Sporting a 4.0 GPA and his athletic resume, Nubbe was bound to draw Division One interest. After receiving multiple Division One offers, Nubbe narrowed his list down to three or four schools. The highly decorated Nubbe decided he wanted to be a Longhorn and committed to the University of Texas. He signed onto the school earlier this month.
