One man was burned and another man’s hand was injured in a fireworks explosion in Tenino Sunday night, according to South Thurston Fire.

Both men were thought to be in their late teens or early 20s, Lt. Kris Gray said Tuesday.

About 11:45 p.m. Sunday, fire crews were dispatched to the 2900 block of 143rd Avenue Southeast after an explosion was reported.

Gray said one of the men was holding the device while the other man lit the fuse. When the device exploded, one man suffered a serious hand injury and burns to his face and shoulder, he said. The other man suffered what Gray called a “moderate hand injury.”

After the explosion, they were taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, but the seriously injured man has since been transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Gray said.
