A 29-year-old Portland woman was the victim killed in a Sunday shooting that prompted an hours-long stand-off with police, court documents reveal.
Mariela Gonzalez-Rocha was found dead in her apartment in the 2400 block of Southeast 171st Avenue.
Davonte Donahue, 29, is accused in her death and was arraigned in court Tuesday afternoon. He faces several charges, including first-degree murder (domestic violence) and five counts of attempted murder after police say he shot over 30 rounds at officers from inside the top-floor apartment.
A probable cause affidavit in the case reveals Donahue was Gonzalez-Rocha’s ex-boyfriend. Police say Gonzalez-Rocha called 9-1-1 about 3:30 p.m. Sunday and said she was being held hostage in her apartment bathroom by her ex-boyfriend. The dispatcher reported hearing her say, “Please, please don’t. Please (expletive) don’t.”
The dispatcher also said a male voice on the call said his name was “Jason,” that the woman calling was high on drugs, and that no guns were in the house. Then, the woman said “Davonte Donahue” before the call abruptly ended, according to the court document.
A few minutes later, neighbors also called 9-1-1 to report hearing gunshots in the apartment complex.
After 10 hours and numerous attempts by police to enter the apartment by breaking in windows, using tear gas and a robot, officers arrested Donahue about 1 a.m. Monday. Police say he had barricaded himself inside a room after shooting dozens of rounds at officers.
Police found Gonzalez-Rocha lying face down on the floor, dead from a gunshot wound. An autopsy was conducted Tuesday morning, but the medical examiner has not yet released the official cause and manner of death.
Donahue had a warrant out for his arrest after he escaped a Portland federal re-entry center in August, according to federal court records.
Donahue was sentenced in federal court in March 2016 to nine years in federal prison for sex trafficking of a minor, a 17-year-old girl. He was released on July 6 of this year and transferred to the Northwest Regional Reentry Center in Portland, according to the court records.
He escaped Aug. 12, caught on security cameras running to the center’s recreation path and jumping over a fence into a neighboring Ramada Inn parking lot, where a white sedan was waiting for him, according to court records.
Donahue cut off his GPS ankle monitoring bracelet, which was found in the hotel parking lot, deputy U.S. Marshal James Dorsey wrote in an affidavit filed in court. An arrest warrant for Donahue was signed Oct. 4.
A GoFundMe posted by members of Gonzalez-Rocha’s family said she leaves behind a “grieving mother, two sisters, and, worst of all, a young son.”
