The Pe Ell girls basketball team won its first district title game in 12 years on Saturday, defeating Taholah 50-38 in the 1B District 4 Championship Game in Montesano.

“It’s been quite the journey these ladies have taken us on so far,” Pe Ell coach Kelsey Lennox said. “And this is a great accomplishment.”

The Trojans won by double-digits, but it still ended up as their closest win of the season. All 21 of their wins have been by 12 or more points, and they’ll enter the state tournament a perfect 21-0.

“This was the first game all season that was pretty close for us the whole way,” Lennox said. “And I’m so proud of how my girls handled and responded to the pressure.”

Karli Phelps led the way with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Maisy King posted a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.

Madi Engel scored eight points and Brookelynn King scored seven. Emma Kissner and Peyton Zock both scored four, but Kissner grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked a shot while Zock added 16 rebounds and blocked four.

Pe Ell (21-0) will end up in the top eight and earn a trip to Spokane, but their specific Regional Round seeding and opponent will be announced Sunday when the state tournament brackets are released.
