Both improving their scores from Day 1, Adna’s Braeden Salme and Andrew Grim capped a strong golf season on the last day for prep golfers Wednesday at Tumwater Valley for the 1B/2B State Golf Championships, combining to help the Pirates finish sixth as a team among the field.
Salme, after carding an 85 on Tuesday, came back to score an 80 on Wednesday for a two-day score of 165. That score is a four stroke improvement on Salme’s finish a year ago at Deer Park near Spokane. The junior finished 13th among the field.
His teammate, Grim, shot an 81 on the second day after an 87 on Day 1 to finish with a two-day score of 168 to finish 16th.
Their combined efforts helped Adna place sixth as a boys team with 52 points. Upper Columbia Academy won the team title with 79 points, while Dan Harrington of Northwest Christian (Colbert) won the individual title with a two-day score of 153.
“They both played so well,” Pirates coach Luke Salme said. “They were very consistent. They should be very, very proud of themselves. What a great way to end the season.”
Natalie Humphrey, Adna’s lone girl to qualify for the state tournament, snuck into the Day 2 field with a 103 and was in 17th-place heading into the final 18 holes of the tourney. Humphrey finished just short of her pace in Day 2, carding a 107 to finish with a two-day score of 210.
Humphrey’s 210 was good for 19th.
Sound Christian’s Makenna Kelpman took the 1B/2B girls state title by six strokes, with a two-day score of 152, and Wahkiakum’s Avrey Wiltse Hiatt finished fifth with a 179.
