Plan for nighttime on-ramp closures on I-5 between Chehalis and Centralia

Travelers who use on-ramps to Interstate 5 in Lewis County should plan for overnight closures and delays, according to a news release from the Washington state Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

On Tuesday, May 27, WSDOT contractor crews will close several I-5 on-ramps one at a time to complete lane striping work for the new ramp meters being installed as part of the I-5 SW Parkway Drive to Harrison Avenue Ramp Meter project.

Ramp meters are traffic signals at highway on-ramps. When traffic is heavy, the ramp meters turn on and allow one vehicle at a time to enter the freeway. This helps reduce collisions by 30%, improves safety and keeps traffic moving smoothly, according to WSDOT.

• From 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 27, until 5 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, on-ramps will close in the following order:

Southbound:

Exit 82 — for Harrison Avenue

Exit 79 — for Chamber Way

• From 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, until 5 a.m., Thursday, May 29, on-ramps will close in the following order:

Northbound:

Exit 76 — for Parkland Drive

Exit 77 — for Main Street and state Route 6

Exit 79 — for Chamber Way

Southbound Exit 77 — for Main Street and state Route 6

Exit 81 — for Mellen Street

During striping work, only one ramp will close at a time. If a ramp is closed, travelers will need to use a different route to get onto the freeway.

Travelers should slow down, stay alert and expect delays in the work zone, the release stated.

This work depends on dry weather and could be rescheduled.
