A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct over the weekend after pointing what appeared to be a gun at passing traffic on Interstate 5.

About 2 p.m. Saturday, 911 began receiving multiple calls about a man holding a gun over the railing of the Sleater Kinney Road Southeast overpass, Olympia Police Lt. Paul Lower said.

The man's actions began to slow traffic on I-5, Lower said. Multiple officers were dispatched to the scene, he said.

Drivers traveling over the overpass also saw the man and pointed him to out police, according to Lower.

But once police detained the man, they discovered he wasn't pointing a real firearm at passing drivers, but was holding an insect repellent device called a "bug-a-salt," which is in the shape of a gun.

The man was booked into the Nisqually Jail on the misdemeanor offense.
