The Lewis County Fire Protection District No. 14 Board of Commissioners in Randle awarded certificates of recognition to Hampton Lumber and crew member Jon Hamlin for the mill’s help during a July 23 fire near the mill.
Fire officials presented certificates to both Hampton Lumber as an organization and to Hamlin individually for his part in the operation, and they will present the remaining crew members with the same recognition for their efforts in the coming days at the mill.
Randle Fire & EMS responded to a residential structure fire July 23 near 10100 U.S. Highway 12, where, upon arrival, crews found an abandoned structure at 107 Second Ave. fully involved, with live wires hindering initial access. While crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire, the building was ultimately lost.
However, crews successfully protected an evacuated nearby residence from fire damage. Local homeowners also pitched in near Beryl Road, watering lawns and rooftops and extinguishing small spot fires caused by windblown embers.
Volunteers from Packwood and Glenoma fire departments responded, along with help from Hampton Lumber, the Department of Natural Resources, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Service and Lewis County Public Utility District.
