Registration is now open for this year’s “Expanding Your Horizons” event, a half-day science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) career exploration conference for young women in grades six through nine.
The conference will take place at the Centralia College campus on Saturday, Oct. 19.
For attendees, the day begins at 7:45 a.m. and concludes at 11:50 a.m. Attendees at this year’s conference can select two hands-on STEAM career workshops from a list of 22 different workshops.
“All participants will also be able to attend an exciting assembly where students will help representatives from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry demonstrate the wacky world of electrostatics and learn how wind turbines and solar cells can power our cities,” organizers said in a news release.
This will be the 29th year that the Lewis County Chapter of American Association of University Women and the Centralia College TRIO/TS programs have combined to offer girls in the local area a variety of hands-on workshops taught by career women in STEAM-related fields, according to a news release.
“Expanding Your Horizons presents a unique opportunity for young women to increase their interest in careers in the STEAM fields, foster their awareness of the diversity of career opportunities in those fields and engage with female role models who are employed in those fields,” organizers said in a news release.
The registration fee is $10 per family. Scholarships are available.
