A late rally and a Herculean effort from Jessie Gilbert sunk Toledo softball in a non-league contest at home to Ocosta, 5-4.
Holding on to a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh, the Riverhawks let the Wildcats tie the game in the sixth, before a two-spot in the seventh gave the Wildcats a 5-3 lead.
The Riverhawks responded with some fight in the bottom of the seventh, with Mialeigh Jurica scoring a runner from second to trim the lead to just one, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
Jurica finished with two of the Riverhawks’ three hits, finishing with three RBIs and a run scored. Quyn Norberg had the lone other hit for Toledo.
Ocosta’s Jessie Gilbert threw a complete game, allowing four runs — all unearned — on three hits and four walks. Gilbert finished with 19 strikeouts.
She also went 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and a solo home run.
Toledo will return to league play against Rainier in a doubleheader on Monday.
