Riverhawks Outlast Ocosta at Home

TOLEDO — In a game where the Toledo boys basketball team just couldn’t quite shake Ocosta, the Riverhawks managed to do just enough in a 58-54 win Wednesday night at home in a non-league contest.

The Riverhawks rocketed out to a 19-4 lead early in the first quarter, but just couldn’t quite keep the Wildcats down, and trailed at the half by two points after a second quarter letdown.

“They played really hard,” Riverhawks coach Grady Fallon said. “We had some unforced errors, you know how that works where you miss a lay-in and then they make a 3. Even late in the game we fouled them on a 3-pointer. They kept hanging around.”

But Toledo would retake the lead, and though not completely pull away from Ocosta, do enough to get the job done after a bit of a layoff for Christmas.

Conner Olmstead led the Riverhawks with 19 points, and Kaven Winters added another 16, with Carson Gould rounding out double figure scorers with 10 points.

“We didn’t shoot a ton but once we got the ball inside and kicked it out things started to work,” Fallon said. “We started executing some sets, but then we’d turn it over or take a rushed shot to let them back into it.”

Still, though it wasn’t always pretty, a win is a win.

“I told them in the locker room that you should be smiling right now,” Fallon said. “We didn’t play great but we won.”

The Riverhawks will take the New Year off before returning to league play against Rainier next Thursday.
