Riverhawks Stay Alive With Dogged Defense

Though it wasn’t an offensive showcase, Toledo’s defense proved nearly unbreakable as the Riverhawks decimated North Beach, 37-19, in a loser-out match of the 2B District 4 girls basketball playoffs on Tuesday at Rochester High School.

The Riverhawks held the Hyaks scoreless in the first quarter and led 15-5 at the half. Toledo pulled away in the third quarter, taking a 28-8 lead and cruising the rest of the way to seal the win.

“We started off cold, had a lot of good looks but couldn’t convert,” Toledo coach Randy Wood said. “We kind of heated up in the second and third quarters and put them away.”

Greenlee Clark led the Riverhawks with eight points, while Vanesa Rodriguez and Rose Dillon each pitched in seven and Taylor Langhaim added six.

“We played pretty good defense and we moved the ball well against their zone,” Wood said. “Proud of the girls. Everyone got to play and they all contributed, whether it was on offense or defense.”

Toledo moves on to another loser-out match, this time against league foe Rainier at 6 p.m., Thursday, at Rochester High School. The Mountaineers lost 49-32 to Raymond in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
