Rochester’s boys basketball team had its chances late on Wednesday against Shelton, but the Warriors couldn’t get the ball to drop in the final minute of a 50-48 loss.
“We improved on a lot of things tonight,” Rochester coach Caleb Sells said. “But we still missed the shots we needed to make … We make a few more of those shots, we’re singing a different tune.”
The Warriors tied the game at 48 with a pair of free throws with about 50 seconds to play, and after getting a rebound, they were able to get an open look. It didn’t fall, and Shelton took the lead on the next possession with 10 seconds to play.
Rochester’s last two shots didn’t fall, including an open look in the final seconds after an offensive rebound.
Sells was proud of the way the Warriors battled back to keep it close, especially after a flurry of turnovers early in the fourth gave the momentum to Shelton.
“The kids fought,” Sells said. “The student section was in it., and it was intense. Even when you lose, that’s still a fun game to be a part of.”
Colton Weiss and Brayden O’Connor both scored 13 points to lead the Warriors in scoring, while Bryce Morgan added 10.
Rochester (0-7) will look to snap its seven-game losing streak on Friday at Centralia.
