Rochester Pulls Out Five-Set Thriller at Shelton

Five sets weren’t enough drama for the Rochester volleyball team, which pulled out a high-wire act to down Shelton on the road in extra points in the fifth to take its 2A EvCo matchup with the Highclimbers 15-25, 25-14, 16-25, 25-18, 17-15.

“There were times they were just everywhere, all over the floor,” Rochester coach Bridget Morris said. “I’m an extremely proud coach.”

And if the extra points still weren’t drama enough, just look at how the Warriors got there.

After forcing the final set with a win in the fourth to tie things up, Rochester immediately ceded momentum back to its hosts, falling into a 9-3 hole, six points from defeat.

“I took a timeout, and I was like, ‘Girls, this is where we dig deep, this is what separates the strong from the weak,’” Morris said.

And dig deep the Warriors did. A 9-3 run of their own tied the set up at 12-12, and despite giving up two quick points, Rochester fought off a pair of match points to force the game into extras.

“Once we got to 14-14, we were like, ‘No wait, we’re doing this,’” Morris said.

From there, it was a quick matter of three more points to seal the deal.

Delany Winter led the way at the net with eight kills and eight blocks, while Isabella Masias had five blocks of her own.

“They were just beasts at the net,” Morris said.

Hailey Angwood had four kills and a good night setting, Kylee Wild added three kills, and Roisin Stull spent the whole night covering “all over” the court defensively.

Rochester (3-4, 2-0 2A EvCo) will try to make its momentum translate into a Thursday road matchup at Tumwater.

“For sure, being able to start 2-0 in league, I don’t know if we’ve ever done that ever,” Morris said. “It’s good for the girls to have some confidence going into Tumwater.”
