Rochester Middle School student Yesenia Carbajal Mendez recently completed a week as a page in the House of Representatives.

During the week of Jan. 29 through Feb. 2, Carbajal Mendez served as a page for Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, according to a news release. Carbajal Mendez completed a 40-hour work week, including attending page school, making deliveries throughout the campus and serving members on the chamber floor.

"Yesenia was diligent, a quick learner, and did a wonderful job assisting legislators and staff during her week at the Capitol," Abbarno said. "I am glad she had the opportunity to learn more about her state government and be part of the process. I am proud to have been Yesenia's sponsor and grateful to have had the opportunity to learn more about her, her family and her favorite singer Jenni Rivera."

Carbajal Mendez is also involved in athletics and volunteers in her community.

Eligible applicants must be at least 14 and younger than 17 and can earn up to 20 hours of community service. Pages also earn a stipend of $65 a day. Financial assistance is available to applicants to travel and stay in Olympia.

"I can't say enough positive things about the legislative page program — I strongly encourage students in our district and state to apply and take advantage of this opportunity," Abbarno said.
