“Safety City,” a vibrant miniature city designed to teach young children safety basics, returned to Lewis County this week.

The mini city opened to Lewis County elementary students, teachers and law enforcement at Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers south of Chehalis on Monday and will stay open through the end of the school day on Friday.

Safety City is a national program focused on teaching young children the fundamentals of safety.

It has been a regular field trip for kids in Lewis County for over 40 years.

“Since 1984, Safety City has been a favorite field trip for elementary school kids, teaching them life-saving lessons about water safety, fire prevention, 911 protocols, railroad safety and more,” the Chehalis Fire Department said in a Facebook post on Monday. “It’s a rare and inspiring collaboration between firefighters, law enforcement, 911 dispatchers, railroad employees, and educators, all working together to prepare the next generation to stay safe and confident in any situation.”

More than 700 students toured Safety City in 2023, coming from Adna, Fords Prairie, Oakview, Jefferson Lincoln, Lintott, Washington, Napavine and Pe Ell elementary schools, according to previous Chronicle reporting.
