An 80-year-old Salkum man was struck and killed by a vehicle while he was checking his mail on Gore Road near Equine Drive at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Jan. 4.

The 51-year-old driver told investigators he had been driving eastbound on Gore Road while a larger “chicken truck” was traveling westbound. Due to the other vehicle’s headlights and fact that it was dark out, the driver said “he did not know anyone was there until he struck them,” according to a statement from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

Washington State Patrol responded to assist the sheriff’s office at the scene.

The driver showed no signs of impairment and no infractions or criminal charges have been issued against the driver, according to the sheriff’s office.
