It was the Jackson Esary show as Kalama’s senior quarterback detonated for seven touchdowns and the No. 2 Chinooks ran away from No. 7 Onalaska, 58-6, in Kalama on Saturday in 2B Southwest Washington Football League South Division action.
Esary ran rampant for 130 of the Chinooks’ 152 total yards on the ground, piling up three rushing scores on 11 carries. He was even more deadly through the air, going 10 for 13 for 249 yards and four TDs with two picks.
“They’re a really good team and they’re physical,” Onalaska coach Mazen Saade said. “No. 4 (Esary) is a good player and their defense played well. Coach Walker did a heck of a job getting No. 4 ready.”
It was a stunning result in what was supposed to be a rematch of the drag-down dogfight that was Onalaska’s 68-58 regular-season victory last season on March 12. It was also a rematch of the last 2B state championship match in 2019, a 48-30 win for the Loggers.
This time, it was all Chinooks.
After falling behind 8-0, Marshall Haight pounded in a 1-yard touchdown to pull the Loggers within two points at 8-6. That was the closest Onalaska would get, and the final time it would score. Kalama reeled off 50 unanswered points with a balanced offensive attack (152 on the ground, 249 through the air).
Onalaska’s offense, meanwhile, was plagued once again by drive-stalling penalties, 12 in total, which have been a problem for the Loggers all season. Kalama, in comparison, committed just six on the night.
“The biggest thing is we put ourselves behind the chains,” Saade said. “We’d put a drive together and then get penalties. Take nothing away from Kalama. They’re a quality team.”
Haight was the Loggers leading rusher with 22 carries for 59 yards and the lone TD. Gunnar Talley added 43 yards on six touches and Kayden Mozingo carried the rock 10 times for 40 yards.
Onalaska (3-4, 3-1 league) takes its first league loss and will tentatively travel to Adna on Friday. The Pirates are in COVID protocol and were forced to cancel their game with Wahkiakum on Oct. 15.
