Self-inflicted errors hurt Tigers in loss to Vikings

The Mossyrock volleyball team got back in the win column on Thursday, sweeping Napavine 25-19, 25-19, 25-19.

Napavine had the lead for a majority of the first set, but the Vikings stormed back to take a 1-0 lead. Mossyrock carried that momentum into the second set, building a big lead, and though some mistakes kept Napavine within striking distance, the Vikings were able to hold on to go up two.

The third set was similar to the second, as Napavine chipped away, but it was too little, too late.

Erin Cournyer led Mossyrock with 18 assists and seven digs, while Taylor Schwartz added 15 digs and Calliope Schultz dished out nine assists.

Saydi Mendoza tallied seven kills, while Chesney Schultz collected seven kills and two blocks at the net and Adyson Barrows logged four kills and three aces.

Though the Tigers battled in each set, they suffered from several self-inflicted wounds, including 26 hitting errors.

“I felt like our serving and serve receive was strong,” Napavine coach Monica Dailey said. “But we’re making too many third ball errors that are killing us.”

Jessie McCoy tallied 16 digs, six kills, five assists, and three aces, while libero Emily Kang had 12 digs and was perfect from the service line. Lilly Grabianowski added nine digs, and Stephanie Camacho-Chavez and Kendall Kelly both were perfect from the line.

“We’re still trying to find their identity,” Dailey said. “I see spurts of it here and there. They are very capable. I have faith in them, they just have to be more consistent. When they are moving well and working together, they do very well.”

Both teams will be back on Tuesday. Napavine (3-3) will look to break a two-game skid at home against Adna, while Mossyrock (4-2) will look to make it two wins in a row at Rainier. Both of those games are non-league matchups.
