Shorey Road reopens to traffic after closure due to river erosion

Shorey Road was reopened to traffic on Tuesday after previously being closed due to river erosion.

"Shorey Road is now open to traffic, but please note a single-lane restriction near Tune Road at milepost 0.60," Lewis County Public Works reported Tuesday. "Be sure to follow the temporary traffic signal and drive with caution through the construction area."

Both lanes of Shorey Road were closed to traffic after erosion along the Newaukum River was discovered late last month.

Lewis County Engineer Geoff Soderquist said at the time that the closure came after rain hammered the region and raised river levels, though the river bank has eroded in the area before.

“It’s been a long-term problem,” Soderquist said. “Really, it’s a long-standing river migration issue.”

Photos showed the erosion was about two feet from the road last week.
