Sirens: Man points pistol at vehicle; Mother punches child, caller reports; Neighbors bicker over cigarette smoke

Centralia Police Department

Theft

• A 32-year-old Centralia man described by police as a transient was cited and released for third-degree theft at about 8:40 a.m. Dec. 23 in the 600 block of North Tower Avenue after he allegedly stole beer from a local store.

• A 52-year-old transient from Centralia was arrested and booked into Lewis County Jail for third-degree theft after leaving a local restaurant and not paying for his food. He was contacted by police after being reported as being disorderly by citizens. He continued to be disorderly with police present and was taken into custody for the theft. The report was made at 9:46 a.m. Dec. 23 in the 100 block of North Tower Avenue.

• An enclosed, 24-foot Mirage trailer with Washington plates 23869AJ was reported stolen at about 12:50 p.m. Dec. 24 in the 400 block of Downing Road. The trailer was last seen approximately three days ago on the owner’s property.

• At about 2:37 p.m. Dec. 26 in the 1200 block of Alder Street, an officer located a suspect vehicle in a theft that occurred approximately three months ago. A 40-year-old Centralia man was arrested and released with a citation for third-degree theft. He was also issued a court summons to appear on an outstanding Centralia Municipal Court warrant. A 34-year-old Centralia woman was also identified as a suspect in the case, but she was not present. A citation for third-degree theft was sent to the Centralia Municipal Court for charging.

 

Crashes

• A minor two-vehicle collision was reported at 10:34 a.m. Dec. 23 in the 100 block of West High Street. Both drivers exchanged insurance information before leaving the scene.

• No injuries were reported after a vehicle crashed into a stop sign at the intersection of North Pearl Street and East Alaska Way at about 5:27 p.m. Dec. 3.

• No injuries were reported after a two-vehicle, head-on crash at the intersection of East Sixth Street and B Street at about 12:23 p.m. Dec. 24. The at-fault vehicle was reported to have been speeding while making the turn, lost control and slid into the oncoming lane. 

• A two-vehicle, non-injury collision was reported at the intersection of North Pearl Street and West Sixth Street at about 2:07 p.m. Dec. 26.

• A two-vehicle, non-injury collision was reported at West Plum Street and South Tower Avenue at about 4:57 p.m. Dec. 26.

• A two-vehicle, non-injury crash was reported in the 700 block of Harrison Avenue at about 7:24 p.m. Dec. 26.

 

DUI

• Rodolfo U. Vazquez Garcia, 28, of Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for driving under the influence just after noon Dec. 24.

 

Assault

• A man in the 200 block of East Chestnut Street reported that his father kicked, choked and threatened him at about 8:15 a.m. Dec. 24. The suspect fled the scene and refused to return when asked by the officer. Garrett G. Whittaker, 46, of Centralia, was referred to the Lewis County Prosecutor's Office for second-degree assault and harassment.

• At about 11:55 p.m. Dec. 24 in the 1000 block of Belmont Avenue, a customer walked into a convenience store and told the clerk that a man was beating a woman in a car in the parking lot.  The suspect vehicle left during this time. The clerk called 911, and officers located the vehicle a short time later. The male and female occupants denied any assault took place.

 

Trespassing 

• At about 1:47 p.m. Dec. 25 in the 1000 block of West Fourth Street, officers responded to a trespassing complaint involving a male who got his vehicle stuck on private property. The caller advised police that the male had left on foot, but his vehicle was still on their property. Officers located the male a few blocks away and coordinated with the property owner to get his vehicle removed.  The vehicle owner, a 64-year-old Centralia man, was arrested and released with a court summons for an outstanding Centralia Municipal Court warrant and given a trespass warning per the property owner’s request.

 

Burglary

• Damon Kay, 53, of Napavine, was arrested at about 8 p.m. Dec. 25  for burglary after he allegedly broke into a business in the 1200 block of Harrison Avenue and damaged property inside.

 

Welfare check

• Officers responded to a welfare check of a male who appeared to be under the influence and walking near the roadway in the 300 block of South Tower Avenue at about 12:27 p.m. Dec. 26.  Officers contacted the adult transient male and determined he did not violate any laws and was not a danger to himself or others.

 

Vehicle prowl

• An unknown suspect shattered the window of a vehicle and stole a purse, according to a report at 8:45 p.m. Dec. 26 in the 700 block of Pioneer Way.

 

Chehalis Police Department

Unlawful camp

• A caller reported what was believed to be an illegal homeless camp at state Route 6 and Southwest Riverside Drive at about 11:15 a.m. Dec. 22. The dispatch log noted the camp was unoccupied.

 

Hit-and-Run

• A hit-and-run was reported at 12:11 p.m. Dec. 22 at Southwest James Street and Southwest Chehalis Avenue. The suspect vehicle was described as a gray Ford truck with a black stripe.

• A hit-and-run was reported in a parking lot in the 1400 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at about 10:53 a.m. Dec. 23. There was no suspect information or camera footage available. 

• A hit-and-run was reported in the 800 block of Northwest Pennsylvania Avenue at about 2:20 p.m. Dec. 23. A 2009 Toyota Camry was reportedly “undrivable” after the crash, which occurred sometime in the morning.

• At 6:15 p.m. Dec. 23, a hit-and-run was reported in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue. No additional information was available as the case remains under investigation.

 

Crash

• A two-vehicle, non-injury crash was reported at 2:18 p.m. Dec. 22 at Northwest State Avenue and Northwest Chamber of Commerce Way.

• A crash was reported in the 100 block of Northwest Maryland Avenue at 5:27 p.m. Dec. 24. No additional information was provided by police. 

 

Disorderly conduct

• A caller in the 1500 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue reported a disorderly male was “screaming about murder and killing people” at about 5:35 p.m. Dec. 22.



• A man was reportedly “yelling and screaming” and getting in and out of his vehicle in the 600 block of Cascade Avenue at about 3:06 p.m. Dec. 23. The man also threw a skateboard across the street, according to the caller.

• A caller in the 1500 block of North National Avenue reported their daughter was “losing it” at 8:23 p.m. Dec. 23. The daughter was trying to give all of her money to a stranger and had already given away her dog.

• A report of disorderly conduct was made after a man began yelling at customers at 6:36 p.m. Tuesday at a business in the 1700 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue.

 

Theft

• Shoplifting was reported by a caller in the 1500 block of South Market Boulevard at about 6 p.m. Dec. 22.

• A man was caught trying to steal items from a store in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at about 10:51 a.m. Dec. 23. A caller reported all the items were returned. The suspect was last seen walking north.

• A man was cited or arrested after allegedly stealing a couple of drinks from the deli area of a business in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at about 12:26 p.m. Dec. 24.

• Third-degree theft was reported in the 500 block of South Market Boulevard at 10:09 a.m. Dec. 26. No additional information was provided by police.

• At 2:35 p.m. Dec. 26, a caller in the 1600 block of Northwest Avenue reported that a wallet was stolen Nov. 24. The woman said the wallet was inside a vehicle she sold and that the buyer was refusing to return it.

• Store security detained an individual for shoplifting at about 4 p.m. Dec. 26 at a business in the 1600 block of Louisiana Avenue. The suspect, who was cooperative, was either cited and released or will have charges referred for third-degree theft. 

 

Mental health transport

• An individual was transported for mental health care after an initial report that a person in a store in the 1500 block was bleeding from the ear at about 6:51 p.m. Dec. 22.

 

Suspicious vehicles and people

• At about 7:33 p.m. Dec. 22, a caller in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street reported that people were doing drugs inside a van that had its lights on with cardboard covering the windows. An officer checked out the vehicle, which had no occupants inside.

• A caller in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street reported at 12:36 p.m. Dec. 23 that a man in a Dodge Caravan nearly struck their vehicle. The man was then seen using binoculars to watch a building. There were no arrests.

• A caller in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue reported at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 23 that an elderly man was asking vulgar questions while in the vitamin aisle of a business.

• A person lying inside a vehicle with a broken window behind a business was reported in the 1500 block of South Market Boulevard at 9:18 p.m. Dec. 24.

• A caller in the 1300 block of Southwest William Avenue reported secondhand information that a home was having “a huge party with guns and drugs and possibly a sex vendor from Olympia.” The report was made at 11:45 p.m. Dec. 24.

• A caller in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street reported seeing a male point a pistol at people inside a vehicle at about 12:58 p.m. Dec. 26. The man later entered an apartment, according to the caller. It was not known whether the gun was real or fake. No arrests were made.

• A caller in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street reported a female was outside of her window at 3:35 a.m., Dec. 27, “peeing and now trying not to fall over.” She had been there for about 30 minutes at the time of the report.

 

Fraud

• A business in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana reported that a man attempted to fraudulently return merchandise to the store. His attempt was unsuccessful, and the business suffered no losses.

 

Child abuse

• A caller describing herself as a mandatory reporter said she saw a mother punch and slap a child in the face in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at about 4:20 p.m. Dec. 23. The caller said the child appeared to be about 5 years old.

 

Dispute

• A reporting party in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street reported a dispute with a neighbor at 7:21 p.m. Dec. 24. The caller said his upstairs neighbor was “aggressive” about smelling smoke in her apartment that she believed was coming from the caller’s apartment. “Now she’s upstairs making a lot of noise,” the police log reported.

 

Animal abuse

• A reporting party in the 10 block of Northeast Median Street said they saw a male whip a dog with a leash in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. Officers determined no crime had been committed, and the male was gone. The report was made at 9:17 a.m. Dec. 25.

• Animal abuse was reported at 4:17 p.m. Dec. 26 in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street. A caller said the animals had been left in a van without food or water for three days. Officers determined the dogs are being cared for, and the van has been observed moving throughout the city.

 

Vicious dog

• A vicious dog report was made in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street at 6:41 p.m. Dec. 25. No additional information was made available by police.

 

911 caller follows man who made threat

• After reporting a man made threats toward him in the 100 block of Southwest Interstate Avenue at 6:41 p.m. Dec. 25, a caller followed the male through the city and onto Interstate 5, both reaching high speeds. The caller reported being in fear for his life despite the fact that he was the one following the man.

 

Vehicle prowl

• A vehicle prowl was reported at 11:07 p.m. Dec. 25 in the 300 block of Southwest 11th Street.

 

LEWIS COUNTY JAIL STATISTICS

As of Wednesday morning, the Lewis County Jail had a total system population of 152 inmates, including 139 in the general population and 13 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of general population inmates, 117 were male and 22 were female. Of the WERC inmates, 11 were reported male and two were reported female.
