Vancouver police say they found a 2-year-old child dead early Sunday morning after the father allegedly made threats to harm the toddler.
Police responded around 12:50 a.m. to a report of threats. The child's mother said that the father picked up the toddler Saturday evening and later called her making threats to harm the child, according to a Vancouver Police Department news release.
The department issued an Amber Alert around 2:30 a.m. requesting help in locating a vehicle involved in a kidnapping — described as a silver 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander with Washington license plates. Police warned people not to approach the vehicle if it was spotted.
Police later canceled the Amber Alert when they were able to contact the father, who agreed to turn himself in. The man was taken into custody around 4:15 a.m. near Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard and 57th Avenue. The child was found dead, the police statement said.
Police said they believe the child was killed in Gresham, Ore.
The department has not released the father or child's names.
The Vancouver Police Department Major Crimes and Digital Evidence Cybercrime units and the Gresham Police Department are investigating.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further information was immediately available.
