Wallace named Seattle Times' 1A Player of the Year

Add another line to the basketball resume of Toledo's Artem Wallace.

Wallace, the 6-foot-8 post bound for the University of Washington, was named this week as the Class 1A Player of the Year by the Seattle Times.

Wallace, who guided the Indians to a seventh-place finish at the State 1A Tournament, averaged 23 points and 14 rebounds a game. His 23 points a night was the highest average in the area.

Wallace was at his best at the state tournament where he averaged 27 points (second in the tourney) and 14 rebounds (first) a game. He picked up 17 points in his final game to give him 2,000 for his career. He was a first-team All-Tournament pick.

Snohomish's Jon Brockman was named the 4A and overall Player of the Year. Martell Webster of Seattle Prep picked up the 3A award. Brockman and Webster are also going to Washington next season.

Chimacum sophomore Steven Gray was the top 2A player while Zach Gianukakis of Republic was the top Class B player.

Former Toledo hurlers shine

Former Toledo standout Jeff Caley ran his mound record to 3-0 when he led Pacific Lutheran University to a 7-1 win over the University of Puget Sound last Friday.

Caley, a sophomore left-hander, also picked up his first collegiate complete game, going nine innings and giving up five hits with three walks, four strikeouts and one pickoff.

It was a 1-1 game through six innings before the Lutes broke out with six runs over the final three frames.

So far in 34 innings pitched, Caley has a 1.324 ERA and eight pickoffs.

Another former Toledo athlete, Mary Miller, ran her mound record to 10-5 when Illinois (15-11) came back to defeat No. 20 Northwestern in the final game of the Stanford Classic last weekend.

Miller pitched out of jams in the second, third and fifth innings.

The Illini begin the Big Ten season later this week.
