State 1B/2B Volleyball First-Round Matchups

Posted

The wait is over. The WIAA’s seeding committee announced first-round state 1B and 2B volleyball matchups Sunday morning, giving local teams their first glimpse at the bracket and their road to a trophy.

Mossyrock earned the No. 2 seed after running a 14-1 overall record, and it’s only loss coming to Class 2B’s No. 8 Toutle Lake. The Vikings defeated a Class 2B, Class 1A and Class 2A team in non-league play and didn’t lose a single set in league action.

For 1B, 20 teams have qualified for state and the eight lowest-seeded  teams will play in a loser-out match at 8 a.m. Thursday. The winners advance to the 16-team tournament.

The 2B bracket is a traditional 16-team bracket. Adna is the No. 11 seed, despite placing fourth in one of the toughest districts in the state. Rainier fittingly took the No. 16 seed after playing a pigtail game to enter the district tournament, then upset three-straight teams to qualify for state for the first time in 24 years.

Class 1B: No. 2 Mossyrock (18-1) vs. the winner of No. 18 Pateros and No. 15 Shoreline Christian at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, on Court 8.

Class 2B: No. 11 Adna (12-5) vs. No. 6 Walla Walla Valley Academy at 8 a.m., Thursday, on Court 5.

Class 2B: No. 16 Rainier (6-9) vs. No. 1 La Conner at 11:45 a.m., Thursday, on Court 5.
