The Washington State Patrol has identified the driver killed in a crash off the freeway in South Thurston County on Sunday, Aug. 25.

Tony Avery, 40, of Centralia, was declared dead at the scene, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Avery was reportedly driving south on Interstate 5 at a “high rate” of speed at about 4:15 a.m. on Aug. 25 when he drove off the road south of the Maytown rest area and came to a stop in the trees, where the vehicle caught fire.

The road was blocked for nearly six hours after the crash, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.
