Updated: State tournament seeds, regional round matchups set

The WIAA released this weekend's regional round matchups, and 12 area teams will be taking part in Regionals on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday.

In games between teams seeded one through eight, both teams are guaranteed a spot in Yakima or Spokane, but the winner will advance to the quarterfinals while the loser will begin play in the Round of 12.

Games between teams seeded nine through 16 (or 20 for the 1B boys) are loser-out games, where the winner will make up the rest of the 12-team field at the state tournament sites.

The 1A and 2A tournament will take place in Yakima, while the 1B and 2B tournaments will take place in Spokane. Both tournaments begin on Feb. 28.

Starting at 2A, the W.F. West girls were awarded the No. 3 seed, and they’ll play No. 6 Archbishop Murphy at home on Friday at 8 p.m.

The W.F. West boys were given the No. 15 seed, and they’ll have to go on the road and top No. 10 Sammamish to qualify for Yakima. That game is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. at Issaquah High School.

Tenino snuck into the top eight in the 1A boys bracket, ensuring them a spot in Yakima. The Beavers will have a tall task as they’re set to face No. 1 Zillah, which is a perfect 23-0, on Friday at 8 p.m. at Davis High School in Yakima.

As expected, the Napavine, Rainier, and Adna girls were all a part of the top eight in the 2B bracket. Napavine was awarded the top seed and will host No. 8 Mabton at W.F. West on Saturday at 2 p.m., while Rainier and Adna were given the No. 5 and No. 6 seed, respectively.

Both teams will head east for their regional matchups, as Rainier will face No. 4 Colfax at West Valley High School in Spokane and Adna will go up against No. 3 Okanogan at Wenatchee High School on Friday at 8 p.m.

The unbeaten Napavine boys are the No. 2 seed in the 2B boys bracket, and they’ll host No. 7 Saint George’s at W.F. Wests on Saturday at noon. The Adna boys are the No. 10, and they’ll host No. 15 La Conner at W.F. West on Saturday at 6 p.m. for a spot in Spokane.

In the 1Bs, the Mossyrock and Pe Ell girls were both placed in loser-out games. Mossyrock is the No. 10 seed, and the Vikings will welcome No. 15 Evergreen Lutheran to W.F. West pm Friday at 6 p.m., while the Trojans were placed at No. 16 and will have to travel to Grandview High School to face No. 9 Sunnyside Christian on Friday at 6 p.m.

The boys 1B tournament is the only area bracket that has 20 teams, and Oakville was given the No. 19 seed. That means they’ll need to win two road loser-out games to make it to Spokane, starting with a trip east to face No. 14 Wilbur-Creston-Keller. That matchup is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Wilbur-Creston-Keller High School.

If the Acorns win, they’ll play Friday or Saturday against No. 11 Muckleshoot Tribal in Auburn on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a loser-out game.

The Mossyrock boys are already assured a spot in Spokane as the No. 7 seed, and they’ll play for a spot in the quarterfinals against No. 2 Wellpinit at Cheney High School on Saturday at 4 p.m.
