State Volleyball: Cream of crop in C2BL move on at state

YAKIMA — For much of the regular season, there was a clear best three teams in the C2BL.

Adna seemingly was a buzzsaw in everyone’s way. Mossyrock seamlessly made the return to Class 2B and were back in the district title game. Rainier was a constant force amongst the cream of the crop.

So when the 2B state tournament kicked off on Wednesday morning inside the Yakima ValleySunDome, those three rose to the occasion.

Top-seeded Adna survived an early push from 16th-seeded La Conner, but nabbed control and picked up a 25-19, 25-15, 25-18 victory. Fourth-seeded Mossyrock exasperated every last bit of energy to triumph over 13th-seeded Colfax 27-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-20.

The Pirates pulled out in front in each set, but never shooed away the Braves until late in all of them. Some timely aces and down the line kills helped Adna move into the night shift of the tournament.

It was a classic back-and-forth between the Vikings and Bulldogs. The opening set featured both sides with set points in their back pocket and the fourth set was a case of exchanging sideouts. Mossyrock used some back row prowess to keep rallies alive and stave off Colfax.

A couple hours before those two started their quest to a state title, No. 6 Rainier fended off a gritty No. 11 Davenport team in four sets 25-16, 25-23, 25-27, 25-15. The Mountaineers had a chance to record a sweep, with two match points at their disposal.

Davenport proceeded to score five of the final six points to extend the match. Rainier (18-4) didn’t let the match go any longer by jumping out to an 8-3 lead that ballooned to double digits.

For the quarterfinals that get underway on Wednesday night at 7:15 p.m., Adna gets Liberty (Spangle), Mossyrock faces Coupeville and Rainier takes on Freeman.

In Class 1B, No. 20 Pe Ell was eliminated from the tournament in a pigtail match against No. 13 Soap Lake, swept 25-12, 25-19, 25-21 on Wednesday morning. Plenty of errors doomed the Trojans in the opening set and an early 8-2 deficit was too big of a hole to dig out of.

Still, Pe Ell (13-10) kept it competitive in the last two sets. It staved off three set points in the second and kept the spark by leading for 50 percent of the third set.

Setter and All-Columbia Valley Co-MVP Brookelynn King is the lone senior on the roster. All others are expected back for the 2025 season.
