Sturgeon Retention Set to Open for Two Days on Lower Columbia

Posted

Anglers will get a chance to land a white sturgeon as a portion of the lower Columbia is slated to open for retention on Sept. 11 and 18. Retention of green sturgeon is prohibited.

The opening is due to the legal-size population being large enough to allow for limited retention, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) said in a Wednesday press release.

From the Wauna powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam, including the Cowlitz River, will be open for fishing both days. The daily limit is one fish and the annual limit is two. Catch-and-release for sturgeon will continue to be allowed on all non-retention days.

White sturgeon from 44-inches minimum to 50-inches maximum fork length may be retained. Fork length is measured in a straight line from the tip of the nose to the fork in the caudal fin (tail) with the fish laying on its side on a flat surface, with the tape measure/ruler positioned flat under the fish.
