T-Birds hold on for win after Pope PK

The Tumwater girls soccer team stayed undefeated with a win in a rematch of last year’s district tournament semifinals, beating Ridgefield 1-0.

The lone goal came in the 28th minute, when Emalyn Shaffer drew contact from the Ridgefield keeper and won a penalty kick, which Kayla Pope converted.

From there, it was 52 minutes of defense for the Thunderbirds (5-0, 2-0 2A EvCo) to keep the shutout. In the 69th minute, the Spudders got past keeper Cheyenne Terry, but defender Ali Woods saved Tumwater’s bacon, heading a shot off the line.

Ridgefield kept the pressure up approaching the final whistle, but the T-Bird back line held firm through the end.

Tumwater will return to league play with a game against W.F. West on Tuesday.
