The No. 2 Tumwater girls soccer team got off to a hot start in the 2A state tournament, defeating Sammamish 5-2 at home in its first-round matchup.

The Thunderbirds pulled away with two quick bursts in the first half. Regan Brewer got the scoring started in the 14th minute, and before the clock could turn over to the 15th, 2A EvCo MVP Emalyn Shaffer made it 2-0.

Fifteen minutes later, Cierra Larson found the net to push the lead to 3-0, and Olivia Kee made it 4-0 seven minutes after that, in the 38th.

Sammamish pulled itself back with two goals early in the second half to halve the gap, but no sooner had the RedHawks made it 4-2 than Larson got her second goal of the night to extend the lead back to 5-2.

Tumwater will get one more match on its home turf at Sid Otton Field, against No. 7 Lynden on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lions scraped through their own first-round matchup, beating White River 1-0.
