T-Wolves Show Balance in League-Opening Win

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures and a fifth came close Tuesday, as the Morton-White Pass boys basketball team poured the points on in a 79-51 win over Toutle Lake to open both sides’ C2BL campaigns Tuesday.

Jake Cournyer had his second big outing in three games for the T-Wolves to start the season, leading the way with 21 points to stretch the Ducks’ defense out to the perimeter.

“Jake’s been an outstanding player in this league for four years,” MWP coach Chad Cramer said. “Having him back home, the kids are really happy he’s back. What he does, it really changes the game. It allows our bigs in Hunter (Hazen) and Jace (Peters) and Josh (Salguero) to function better.”

Those three combined for 37 points inside, with Salguero scoring 17, Peters adding 11, and Hazen pitching in nine. Judah Kelly nailed three 3-pointers of his own en route to 13 points.

“We were really trying to stay balanced in our scoring,” Cramer said. “I think that’s a real key for us.”

Carter Dantinne, who’s shifted to a sixth-man role after two years in MWP’s starting lineup, came off the bench with the sole purpose of defending Toutle Lake star Zach Swanson, and while Swanson still led all scorers with 24 points, that was little enough to help the T-Wolves to their comfortable win.

“Zach’s going to get his, but you’ve got to make him work, and Carter did as good of a job as I’ve ever seen done on him,” Cramer said.

MWP blitzed Toutle early, dropping 24 points in the first quarter and running out to a 42-25 halftime lead. Twenty more points in the third quarter helped stretch the lead out to 20, and the Timberwolves saw things out with a 17-10 fourth quarter.

MWP (2-0, 1-0 C2BL) will host Toledo in Randle on Thursday.
