Tenino battles hard, drops league match to Montesano

Despite four goals from the Bulldogs star Addison Potts, the Beavers had stretches of good moments, but wasn’t enough in a 5-1 loss in a Class 1A Evergreen League opener.

Tenino head coach Dave Montgomery feels the opening 20-plus minutes where it outshot Montesano by six and another 15-minute consecutive timeframe, his girls were “clearly the better team.”

“I don’t think there’s any argument,” Montgomery added. “As the first half went on, (Montesano) really started to get some wind in their sails. Once they had momentum on their side, they were able to keep it going.”

Potts found the back of the net in the 23rd and 39th minutes plus the 73rd and 76th minute in the second half. Tenino’s Callie Mickelson scored her 11th goal of the season in the 45th minute on an assist from Holly Thoren.

The Beavers and Bulldogs tied in total shots 10-10.

“I’m really proud that we were able to respond quickly in the second half,” Montgomery said. “They basically were just more athletic than us today. If we keep playing our style of ball and once we start winning balls in the middle, we’re gonna put teams under pressure.”

Tenino returns to the field on Tuesday at Elma.
