Tenino suffers close loss against Bear Creek

It was as close as it can get between the Tenino and Bear Creek girls basketball teams on Friday, with the Beavers ending up on the wrong end of a 39-38 contest.

The two teams were tied after one frame, but the Beavers scored 12 points in the second to open up a lead at halftime.

The Tenino offense matched its production in the first half, but the Grizzlies scored 14 points in the third to get within one before adding 13 in the final frame to end up on top.

Tenino coach Kirsi Gofinch said it was tough to end up on the losing end of a close game, but she was proud of the way the Beavers responded after a 40-point loss at Montesano on Thursday.

“I love how they showed up to battle after a physical game less than 24 hours prior,” Gofinch said. “I think there’s a lot we can learn from this one.”

She commended Brynn Williams, who she said “was great on the boards,” and Keira Laughlin, Brianna Asay, and Georgia Gore. Those three’s defensive efforts, Gofinch said, went beyond the box score.

Gofinch also applauded Holly Thoren, who scored eight points after needing stitches due to an injury she suffered on Thursday.

Kylie Gonia finished with a team-high 10 points, Laughlin scored six, and Asay and Grayless both scored five.

Tenino (2-9, 0-1 1A Evergreen) will be back at the Bear Creek School on Saturday to face Seattle Christian.
