‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ returns to McFiler’s Chehalis Theater on Saturday, June 8

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” fans of all ages, genders and orientations are invited to break out their glitter, corsets and fishnets for a night of fun at McFiler’s Chehalis Theater on Saturday as Riff Raff’s Street Rats returns for its annual Pride Month performance of the 70s cult classic.

“‘Rocky Horror’ is a very LGBTQ-centric event and show, so we proudly fly our Pride flag, and we’re all inclusive with our casting,” said Riff Raff’s Street Rats Director of Operations Joshua Wood. “We’re very adamant about making sure our audience knows they’re welcome, no matter who they are (or) where they come from, that it’s a safe place for everyone to just come have fun and kind of let loose for a night.”

The show’s plot centers around a young engaged couple whose car breaks down near a castle, where they search for help and find an apparently mad scientist and a group of colorful characters before a night of comedy, chaos and seduction ensues.

An all-volunteer theater group based out of the Tracyton Movie House in Bremerton, Riff Raff’s Street Rats specializes in traditional stage productions of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” where a live shadow-cast performs in front of the film playing on the screen and audience members are encouraged to participate via callbacks and use of theater-provided props.

“We act out the show on stage in full costume and makeup. We interact with the audience. People get to throw rice, toast, toilet paper, you name it, inside the theater. (There’s) lots of yelling at the screen,” Wood said.

Riff Raff’s Street Rats has been putting on “Rocky Horror” in the Twin Cities since about 2015, when the Fox Theater in Centralia invited the troupe to perform. The cast returned for annual shows in 2016 and 2017 before the Fox Theater closed for renovations. The troupe later performed a mixed-drag show with the Centralia College Gay Straight Alliance and performed a fundraiser show for Valhalla Animal Rescue at the Chehalis Theater before live theater productions shut down nationwide due to COVID-19 restrictions. After pandemic restrictions eased enough to allow for live shows, Wood reached out to the theater’s new co-owner, Tim Filer, about the possibility of bringing “Rocky Horror” back to Chehalis.

“We’ve been doing one to two shows every year here at least since the pandemic,” Wood said. “We’re all pretty excited to come back to the Twin Cities.”

Riff Raff’s Street Rats’ mission centers around “artists helping artists” and helping support the communities they perform in.

“We’re not Broadway, obviously, so we try to give a leg up or try to bring other people up with us. That way, when ‘Rocky Horror’ comes to the community, at least when it’s us, it’s a positive impact all around,” Wood said.

Doors for Saturday’s performance open at 8 p.m., giving patrons ample time to order food and drinks before the iconic “Rocky Horror” pre-show starts at about 9 p.m.

The pre-show includes games, a costume contest and an initiation ceremony for those seeing “Rocky Horror” live for the first time.

“It’s just a very immersive experience, as it has been since the mid 70s,” Wood said.

The film itself is set to start at about 9:30 p.m. and has a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes.

Tickets are $12 each and can be purchased online at https://www.mcfilerschehalistheater.com/ or at the door. Prop kits will be available for purchase at the theater.  Riff Raff’s Street Rats will be selling “Rocky Horror” merchandise at the show, with profits benefiting the actors and helping cover costs of future shows. The troupe will also have a QR code patrons can scan to donate to the production.

McFiler’s Chehalis Theater is located at 558 N. Market Blvd. in Chehalis.
