Thunderbirds Edge Panthers for Comeback Win

Natalie Sumrock eclipsed 1,000 career points and Tumwater came away with a 56-51, season-opening comeback win over Washougal at home Tuesday.

Tumwater fell into an early hole, down 24-14 at the half, then trailed 46-33 entering the third quarter before exploding for a 23-6 run in the fourth quarter to steal the lead and the game.

“We definitely did not start out strong at all,” Tumwater coach Robin Johnson said. “It looked like our first game, for sure.”

That was partly due to the Thunderbirds getting into early foul trouble against Washougal’s tough defense. But Tumwater flipped the script in the fourth quarter and began pressuring the Panthers on both ends of the floor.

“Happy we gutted it out,” Johnson said.

Aubrey Amendola led the Thunderbirds with a team-high 23 points. Sumrok added 16, Kylie Waltermeyer had 10 and Isabella Lund finished with eight.

Tumwater (1-0) next hosts Class 4A powerhouse Woodinville on Thursday.
