Thursday’s Haze in Lewis County Area ‘Looks Worse Than it Actually is’

Wildfire smoke blowing north into Western Washington this week largely spared the Twin Cities until Thursday morning, when haze painted the sun a familiar reddish.

It’s the densest smoke to cover the area so far this summer, although another devastating wildfire season has been projected for this year.

“It looks worse than it actually is,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Michael McFarland of this morning’s skies.

Air quality is safe, he said. And an incoming cold front and damper weather — just enough to make those cutting hay “cranky” — means the smoke will likely be gone this weekend.

While air quality is worse in higher elevations right now, you’d have to do some significant climbing around here to notice.

“Really nothing to worry about,” McFarland said. “It’s a lot worse in a lot of other places.”
