Thurston County Reports 3,573 COVID-19 Cases

Thurston County saw a slight decrease in weekly COVID-19 cases during the period of Jan. 10 through Jan. 16 as the health department tallied 3,573 new cases.

The prior week there were 3,709 COVID-19 cases reported between Jan. 3 and Jan. 9.

There was one new death reported this week of a woman in her 70s. 

The running total of infections throughout the pandemic in the county landed at 34,152 as of Jan. 18, according to the health department.

The percentage of those infected with COVID-19 who have died decreased to .9% for the county, according to the Washington State Department of Health (DOH).

Out of the 34,152 total county cases reported by Jan. 18, patients who have recovered or are recovering increased to 26,174, according to the health department.



Since last reported, there were 63 new hospitalizations in Thurston County, according to DOH, making the total number since the start of the pandemic land at 1,744 as of Jan. 16.

Health care workers have administered a total of 476,426 vaccine doses countywide since the beginning of the pandemic, according to DOH.

In neighboring Pierce County, deaths decreased to .5 per 100,000, and new cases have skyrocketed to 1,700 per 100,000 population as reported on the morning of Jan. 17, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. The total number of cases in the county reached 138,752 as of Jan. 9, with 1,061 deaths.

In Washington state, as of Jan. 17, there were 1,041,456 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 126,886 probable cases, a total of 48,862 people have been hospitalized because of the illness, and 10,196 people have died, according to DOH. The statewide rate of those who have died after contracting the virus stands at 1%.

About 12.3 million vaccine doses have been administered in the state. The statewide occupancy of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units landed at 28.4%.

Nationwide, as of press deadline, there were 65,159,554 total cases since the start of the pandemic. There were 847,577 confirmed deaths and 79.6% of Americans have at least one of the vaccinations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). New cases over the last 30 days have been on an upward trajectory, while new deaths over the last 30 days are on a steady trend, CDC graphs indicated.
