Thirteen days after falling to Brewster, the Napavine girls basketball team finally got its chance to put that loss in the rear view, and the Tigers did just that with a 58-35 win over Lakes.
The Tigers opened up a 15-point lead after just one frame thanks to a strong offensive showing early, and they maintained that lead while adding a little onto it throughout the final three frames.
Defensively, Napavine didn’t allow more than 10 points in a single quarter, and the Tigers allowed fewer than 10 in three of the four frames.
“I thought our defense was pretty sound tonight,” Napavine coach Shane Schutz said. “Each week, I think we get a little better.”
He commended Hannah Fay, who finished the game with five steals, and Taylen Evander, who both helped hold Lakes’ top scorer to just 10 points.
Evander scored 17 points and added four assists on offense, but it was Hayden Kaut who led the way with a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double. Kaut also added six steals on the defensive end.
Ava Ondong had a nice night off the bench, scoring seven points to finish third on the team in scoring.
“I thought Hayden and Taylen played really well tonight,” Schutz said. “Ava came off the bench and gave us some scoring sparks too.”
Jessie McCoy scored four points and hauled in seven rebounds, and while Nicholle Valentine didn’t record a point, she did log five assists, four steals, and a pair of blocks.
Napavine (7-2) will have another week off before hosting Morton-White Pass next Friday, Jan. 10.
