NAPAVINE — Napavine started its season off on a high note, sweeping visiting Ilwaco in a doubleheader, 9-4 and 13-3, in a non-league, season-opening series win Saturday.

In Game 1, during an unusually-clear and sunny afternoon, the Tigers plated three runs each in the first, third and fifth innings and tallied 12 total hits to outdistance the Fishermen early.

Deacon Parker led the offensive attack with three hits, while Jack Nelson and Ashtin Landry each knocked in two runs a peice.

Senior Gavin Parker was the starter on the mound, striking out seven batters in four innings with 1.00 WHIP. Scott Burdick threw three innings of relief with four Ks and a 2.67 WHIP.

In Game 2, the Tigers bats erupted for six runs in the second inning and smacked 16 total hits in a 13-3 victory.

Conner Holmes, Landry and Nelson each tallied three hits a piece at the plate, with Nelson adding four RBI. Gavin Parker walked twice and drove in a run, while Holmes also walked twice and Nelson nabbed an RBI.

Sophomore Ashton Demarest took off his catching gear from Game 1 and started on the mound in Game 2, striking out five batters across three innings. Holmes also struck out five batters in three innings of relief.

“Real happy to get two games in before the rain,” Napavine manager Brian Demarest said. “We went out and did what we wanted. All our pitchers threw strikes. We started a bunch of young kids. I liked the way (they) and the seniors came out the gate.”

Napavine next heads to league rival Toutle Lake on Wednesday.
