Tigers Trample Trappers in Season Opener

Three Centralia players scored in double digits and the Tigers smacked visiting Fort Vancouver 56-21 for a season-opening victory Wednesday.

Maddie Corwin dropped a game-high 18 points, Emily Wilkerson added 14 and Makayla Chavez scored 13 as the Tigers dominated offensively.

“To get out and have a tip-off and not have to wear a mask, it was nice to see back-to-normal basketball,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said.

The Tigers also put up an impressive showing on the defensive end, holding the Trappers to single-digit scoring in all four quarters.

“The first half, defensively, we played really well,” Ashmore said. “Offensively, I was happy with some stuff. Our defensive and offensive transitions were really good. We did a good job finding each other. Overall, our decision-making was pretty good.”

The only glaring downside was Centralia shot just 8 for 30 from the charity stripe. Ashmore was pleased with how his team got to the line, but said they need to make those free throws count when they get them.

The Tigers shot 37% from the field (23 for 62), including 4 of 14 from long range. Jadyn Hawley added nine points and Maggie Eiland and Liliana Babka each had two.

Centralia (1-1 overall) next hosts Steilacoom in a varsity-only match at 6 p.m. on Friday.
