The Pe Ell girls basketball team held its own against Naselle for a quarter, but couldn’t keep the juice going in a 57-43 loss in 1B Columbia Valley League play.

The Comets won the second quarter 19-9 to go into halftime ahead by seven points, and slowly stretched the lead out to double figures in the second half. The Trojans gave their guests more than a few points, turning the ball over 36 times.

“My girls battled and I can’t fault the effort,” Pe Ell coach Dave Tuengel said. “We’re young and we will learn from this. Our girls are finding out what it takes to compete at this level.”

Karli Phelps led Pe Ell with 13 points. Charlie Carper put up 12 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Brookelynn King brought in 11 boards to lead the Trojans on the glass.

Pe Ell will play at Columbia Adventist next Tuesday.
