Trojans Falter in Waning Moments in First League Loss

After a defeat at the hands of Adna Wednesday night, the Pe Ell boys basketball team had a seven-point lead with a few minutes remaining, but couldn’t hang on in a 43-38 loss to Firm Foundation Thursday night.

Trojans coach Chris Phelps said late game turnovers, including 10 in the final quarter, doomed his team.

“It was one we needed,” Phelps said. “It was a winnable game, too. But these guys are hard workers and we’ll get it right.”

The Trojans (2-3, 0-1 1B CVL) were led in scoring by Jesse Zard’s 10 points and 13 rebounds in a double-double effort. Wyatt Marrs was the next leading scorer with nine. But a series of missed layups in the first half, and the late game mistakes, cost Pe Ell in its league opener.

“We had a lot of opportunities and we got frustrated,” Phelps said. “If you let teams hang around, stuff like this will happen.”

Pe Ell will look to get back on the right track against Ocosta on the road on Saturday for its next contest.
