Trojans remain undefeated by beating Comets

The Pe Ell girls basketball team made it eight for eight on Friday night, defeating Naselle 55-39 to stay unbeaten on the season.

It was Pe Ell’s first game in over two weeks because of the holiday break, and there was a little bit of rust early on.

A few turnovers allowed Naselle to take an early lead, but a half-court buzzer-beater from Karli Phelps gave the Trojans a 15-14 lead after one.

The two sides were deadlocked at 23 at halftime, but the Trojans turned it on in the second half.

“In the second half, we came out determined to take control of the game, and we did just that,” Pe Ell coach Kelsey Lennox said. “This was a good one to get back into the swing of things.”

Peyton Zock scored eight points in the third quarter to help Pe Ell build a lead, and the Trojans continued to pull away in the fourth.

Zock went on to finish with 14 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks, while Phelps finished with a team-high 16 points and eight assists.

“I have to commend (Phelps) on her composure and grit tonight,” Lennox said. “She had a ton of pressure on her, often two or even three defenders at once. She never came out of the game one time.”

In her season debut, Devyn Shannon scored seven points, hauled in five rebounds, and added a pair of assists, and Maisy King grabbed 11 rebounds, scored eight points, and nabbed three steals.

Emma Kissner scored six points and added four rebounds, and Madi Engel scored four points.

The Trojans (8-0, 2-0 1B CVL) will look to remain unbeaten when they travel to Ocosta on Monday.
