TOLEDO — The Indians held the Wildcats to single digit points in each quarter to earn a 68-23 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Tuesday.
Kal Schaplow led all scorers with 16 points and Emma Cline-Maier came off the bench and scored 12 points, with Toledo coach Brian Layton saying Cline-Maier “shot lights out.” He noted her and Vanesa Rodriguez came off the bench and provided a spark.
Toledo led 14-5 after one quarter and scored 23 points in the second quarter for a 37-11 lead at halftime to cruise in the second half.
Ocosta made just eight field goals all game.
“We played good. We had some first quarter jitters but we came out and shared the ball really well,” Layton said. “Everybody scored, a lot of even scoring. They played pretty well for their first game.”
Toledo (1-0) travels to Elma on Monday for a non-league game.
Knights Ride Past Tigers
VANCOUVER — Napavine struggled in the second quarter which allowed King’s Way Christian to build a lead en route to a 50-40 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Tuesday.
Vannie Fagerness led the Tigers with 10 points and seven rebounds and Rae Sisson added nine points. Laurel Quinn led King’s Way Christian with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Napavine shot just 21.8 percent while King’s Way shot 45 percent from the field.
The Knights led just 12-11 after one quarter but King’s Way won the second quarter 19-7 to build a 31-18 lead at halftime. Napavine won the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to earn the win.
Napavine coach Shane Schutz noted the performance of Fagerness and Sisson and also noted Natalya Marcial’s shooting from behind the arc. The Tigers were able to force 28 turnovers.
Napavine (0-1) travels to Mossyrock on Tuesday for a non-league game.
Rochester Takes Down R.A. Long
LONGVIEW — Lexie Jones-Sederberg and Paige Winter each recorded a double-double to lead the Warriors to a 50-39 win against R.A. Long in a non-league girls basketball game here on Tuesday.
Sederberg-Jones scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Winter tallied 19 points and 16 boards.
Miranda Lomax scored 20 points to lead the Lumberjills.
R.A. Long led 12-10 after the first quarter but Rochester battled back and led 22-21 at halftime. It was a close third quarter but the Warriors held the Lumberjills to six points in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
“We’ll take it. Obviously, first game out, but Lexie and Paige played really well. Paige stepped up in the second half and got to the free throw line,” Rochester coach Davina Serdahl said. “I’m proud of their effort. (Kortney) Kerbaugh does the little things and we feel confident with our people coming off the bench, they gave us good minutes. We have some things to work out after our first game out.”
Rochester (1-0) travels to Woodland on Thursday for a non-league game.
Rockets Shoot Past Cardinals
CASTLE ROCK — Winlock’s Addison Hall recorded a double-double but it wasn’t enough as Castle Rock won 69-45 in a non-league girls basketball game here on Tuesday.
Hall scored 25 points to go with 11 rebounds. Karlie Jones added 15 points for the Cardinals.
Castle Rock’s Brooke Wirkkala had 22 points and Ella Anderson tallied 10 points.
The Cardinals struggled in the first half, scoring nine points in each quarter to trail 38-18 at halftime.
“Castle Rock is athletic, quick, they’ve improved quite a bit. We came out with some first game jitters pretty severely,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “We got down a pretty deep hole in the first quarter and foul trouble killed us. Only two people really scored. There were some good things but we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Winlock (0-1) hosts Naselle on Friday in a non-league game.
Monday's Results
Centralia Falls to River Ridge
LACEY — River Ridge started strong and held off Centralia in the second half to earn a 50-35 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Monday.
Carissa Kaut led Centralia with 16 points and Kylie Sharp and Jasmine Mora each added six points.
Ramiah McMath led the Hawks with 12 points and Kim Perez tallied 11 points. Marsani Cannon was also in double figures with 10 points.
River Ridge jumped out to a 15-7 lead and built a 27-18 lead at intermission. The Hawks held Centralia to six points in the third quarter to pull away for the win.
“Girls played hard on defense. Offensively, we struggled in the first quarter and missed a lot of easy shots,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “Hopefully, we’ll get to battle every night and the girls fought to the end. Offensively, we need to work on some things and get better there.”
Centralia (0-1) hosts Emerald Ridge on Wednesday in a non-league game.
